When people hear the phrase executive presence, they often picture someone at the very top of an organisation. They imagine a CEO confidently addressing a room full of employees, a senior leader presenting to a board of directors, or an accomplished entrepreneur commanding attention on stage. It’s a phrase that has become closely associated with corner offices, leadership titles, and years of professional experience.

But over the years, I’ve come to believe that we’ve misunderstood what executive presence really is.

Executive presence isn’t something you develop after becoming a leader.

More often than not, it’s the reason you are seen as a leader in the first place.

Long before a promotion letter is handed over or a new title appears on your business card, people are quietly observing how you think, how you communicate, how you respond under pressure, and how you make others feel. They are asking themselves a simple question, often without even realising it.

“Would I trust this person with greater responsibility?”

That question isn’t answered during a single presentation or performance review. It’s answered through dozens of everyday interactions that gradually reveal your character, your judgement, and your ability to influence others.

“Leadership is practiced not so much in words as in attitude and in actions.” — Harold S. Geneen

One of the biggest myths I encounter is the belief that leadership begins with authority. Many professionals tell themselves that once they become managers, they will communicate differently. Once they lead a team, they’ll learn to delegate. Once they receive a promotion, they’ll become more confident, more decisive, and more influential.

The truth is usually the other way around.

The people who are promoted into leadership roles often display those qualities long before they are officially recognised. They don’t wait for permission to behave like leaders. They begin developing the habits, mindset, and presence that naturally inspire confidence in others.

That doesn’t mean they have all the answers or never make mistakes. It simply means they consistently demonstrate qualities that make people want to follow them.

If you think back to the best leaders you’ve worked with, chances are it wasn’t their designation that earned your respect. It was the way they made decisions when circumstances became difficult. It was the calmness they brought into stressful situations, the clarity with which they communicated, and the genuine interest they showed in the people around them.

They didn’t need to remind everyone that they were in charge.

    Their behaviour spoke for itself.

That, to me, is the essence of executive presence.

It is not about having the loudest voice in the room or dominating every conversation. In fact, some of the most influential leaders I’ve met have also been the quietest. They didn’t command attention through volume; they earned it through consistency. They listened carefully before speaking. They remained composed when others became reactive. They asked thoughtful questions instead of rushing to provide all the answers.

There is a quiet confidence that comes from knowing you don’t need to prove your value in every interaction.

Ironically, that confidence often makes others recognise your value more quickly.

Executive presence is not a performance.

It is a reflection of self-awareness.

Another misconception is that executive presence is largely about appearance. While appearance certainly contributes to first impressions, it is only one part of the story. Dressing professionally can communicate respect, confidence, and attention to detail, but those qualities must be supported by behaviour and communication if they are to create lasting credibility.

Think about the professionals who naturally inspire trust. Their appearance is aligned with their role, but what truly sets them apart is how consistently they conduct themselves. They arrive prepared. They communicate clearly, even when conversations are difficult. They remain respectful during disagreements and take ownership when things don’t go according to plan. They understand that leadership is demonstrated not only through success, but also through the way challenges are handled.

These are the moments that people remember.

Not because they are dramatic, but because they reveal character.

One of the most powerful shifts a professional can make is to stop asking, “When will I be ready to lead?” and begin asking, “How can I lead from where I am today?”

Leadership doesn’t always require a title.

Sometimes it looks like mentoring a new colleague without being asked.

Sometimes it means taking responsibility for solving a problem instead of waiting for someone else to fix it.

Sometimes it means remaining calm when everyone else is becoming anxious.

Sometimes it simply means choosing integrity when no one is watching.

These moments rarely appear on a résumé, but they shape something far more valuable.

    They shape your reputation.

Perhaps the most encouraging thing about executive presence is that it is available to everyone, regardless of age, experience, or designation. It is not reserved for those with impressive titles or decades of corporate experience. It is developed through intentional choices that anyone can begin making today.

Every conversation is an opportunity to practise better communication.

Every meeting is an opportunity to demonstrate preparation and professionalism.

Every challenge is an opportunity to show resilience.

Every interaction is an opportunity to build trust.

Over time, these seemingly ordinary choices become extraordinary because they create consistency. And consistency has a remarkable way of changing how others perceive us.

When opportunities for growth eventually arise, people rarely choose leaders based solely on technical expertise. They choose the individuals they already trust to represent the organisation, inspire confidence, and navigate uncertainty with maturity.

That trust has usually been earned long before the interview for the promotion ever takes place.

Perhaps that is the true meaning of executive presence.

It isn’t something you put on when you finally become an executive.

It is something you cultivate quietly, day after day, until one day the title simply catches up with the person you have already become.

    Gentle Reflection

Think about the next role you aspire to in your career or business. Beyond the responsibilities and the title, what qualities would someone in that position naturally demonstrate every day? Choose just one of those qualities and begin practising it this week, exactly where you are. Leadership rarely begins with a promotion—it begins with a decision to show up differently, long before anyone else expects it.k about the professional you hope to become over the next three to five years. Beyond the title, what qualities would that version of you embody? How would they communicate, lead, make decisions, and build relationships? Now ask yourself one final question: “Am I practising those qualities today, or am I waiting for the role before I begin?” More often than not, the journey to becoming that person starts long before anyone else notices—and that’s exactly where lasting transformation begins.
