There is a quote we’ve all heard countless times:

“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.”

It has been repeated in books, seminars, interviews, and conversations for decades. In fact, we’ve heard it so often that many of us simply accept it as common knowledge without pausing to think about what it truly means.

While I agree with the sentiment, I believe there’s another conversation that deserves equal attention.

Today, the challenge isn’t just creating a good first impression.

The real challenge is creating a consistent one.

Think about it for a moment.

The first time someone encounters you may not be when they meet you in person. It could be when they receive your email. It could be while scrolling through your LinkedIn profile. It could be during a virtual meeting where your camera is switched on. It could be through a recommendation from a colleague, a presentation you deliver, or even the way you introduce yourself over the phone.

Long before someone shakes your hand, they have already begun building a story about who you are.

The question is whether every one of those touchpoints is telling the same story.

“Trust is built with consistency.” — Lincoln Chafee

When I work with professionals on their image and executive presence, many of them initially assume that appearance is the biggest piece of the puzzle. They want to know what colours they should wear, whether their wardrobe reflects their role, or how they can look more polished.

    Those questions certainly matter.

But as our conversations progress, something much deeper begins to emerge.

We realize that appearance is only the opening sentence of a much longer conversation.

What truly shapes people’s perception is the consistency between what they see, what they hear, and what they experience.

Imagine meeting someone who looks exceptionally polished and confident, only to discover that they rarely maintain eye contact, hesitate every time they speak, or fail to follow through on commitments. The polished appearance initially creates a positive impression, but the inconsistency gradually erodes trust.

    Now imagine the opposite.

Someone may not be dressed in the latest fashion, yet they communicate with clarity, treat everyone with respect, listen attentively, and consistently honour their commitments. Over time, people naturally begin to associate that individual with credibility and reliability.

This is why first impressions don’t exist in isolation.

    They evolve into lasting impressions.

And lasting impressions are built through consistency.

One of the most overlooked aspects of professional presence is that people are constantly collecting evidence about who we are.

    Not in dramatic moments.

Not only during annual reviews or important presentations.

But during ordinary interactions that often feel insignificant to us.

They notice whether we arrive prepared.

They notice whether we listen without interrupting.

They notice whether our emails are thoughtful.

They notice how we respond under pressure.

They notice whether we acknowledge the receptionist with the same warmth we extend to the CEO.

None of these moments, on their own, seem particularly remarkable.

But together, they begin to form a pattern.

    And patterns eventually become reputation.

That is why consistency is so powerful. It removes uncertainty.

When people know what to expect from you, they begin to trust you.

When your appearance reflects professionalism, your behaviour reflects respect, and your communication reflects clarity, there is very little disconnect between the image you project and the experience you create.

That alignment becomes your personal brand.

Interestingly, this has very little to do with perfection.

Many people believe they need to get everything exactly right every single time. They worry about saying the perfect thing, wearing the perfect outfit, or presenting themselves flawlessly.

    Perfection is exhausting.

    Consistency is sustainable.

    People don’t expect perfection.

    They appreciate authenticity.

What they are looking for is someone whose actions consistently match their words.

Someone who shows up prepared, regardless of the circumstances.

Someone who remains respectful, even during disagreement.

Someone whose values are visible not only when things are going well, but especially when they are not.

There is another reason consistency matters so much.

Every new interaction either reinforces or contradicts the impression people already have of us.

Imagine meeting someone whose first interaction with you was exceptional. They were warm, articulate, punctual, and engaging. Naturally, you look forward to working with them again.

Now imagine your second interaction is entirely different. They arrive late, seem distracted, barely engage in conversation, and leave without acknowledging anyone.

    Immediately, uncertainty creeps in.

Which version is the real one?

The human mind naturally looks for consistency because consistency feels predictable, and predictability builds trust.

The same principle applies to our professional image.

Your wardrobe should not tell one story while your communication tells another.

Your confidence should not disappear the moment you enter a challenging conversation.

Your professionalism should not depend on who happens to be watching.

Instead, every interaction should reinforce the same message.

    “This is who I am.”

“This is what you can expect from me.”

“This is how I choose to show up.”

Over time, that quiet consistency becomes one of your greatest strengths.

People begin recommending you because they know exactly what kind of experience others will have.

Clients return because your service consistently reflects your values.

Leaders trust you because they know your behaviour is dependable.

Colleagues enjoy working with you because your professionalism isn’t situational—it is habitual.

And perhaps that is what professional presence is really about.

Not creating a remarkable first impression once.

But creating such consistency that every interaction feels like a natural continuation of the last.

Because while you may not get a second chance to create your very first impression, you are given countless opportunities to strengthen it.

    Every meeting.

    Every conversation.

    Every email.

    Every handshake.

Every small moment contributes to the story people tell about you long after you’ve left the room.

The question is not whether people are forming impressions.

    They are.

The question is whether those impressions consistently reflect the person you genuinely want to be.

    Gentle Reflection

Over the next week, pay attention to the different ways people experience you. Think beyond your appearance and consider every interaction you have—your emails, conversations, meetings, phone calls, and even the way you greet people. Ask yourself a simple question: If someone only knew me through these moments, would they walk away with one clear and consistent impression of who I am? Sometimes, the greatest improvements in professional presence begin not with changing who we are, but with becoming more intentional about how consistently we show up.
